UPDATE: Applus+ Achieves the Certification of Its Smog DADdy™ Products

Applus+ -- Through Applus Technologies -- Announces Formal Certification of Its Smog DADdy™ Products by the California Bureau of Automotive Repair

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwired - Jun 19, 2014) - Applus+ Technologies, an industry-leading designer and manufacturer of emissions testing equipment and provider of vehicle inspection services nationwide, is the first vendor to receive certification of this new line of vehicle inspection technology they branded as Smog DADdy™. The products were developed to meet stringent requirements issued by the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) as a significant technology upgrade to the statewide Smog Check vehicle emissions testing program.

Smog DADdy™ is a next generation on-board diagnostics (OBD) device developed for performing emissions inspections on most model year 2000 and newer gasoline and 1998 and newer diesel-powered light and medium-duty vehicles. The new technology will replace less sophisticated test methods for the majority of California vehicles when fully implemented over the coming months.

Applus Technologies partnered with the Clean Air Group, Inc. to serve as its technology distributor for its line of Smog DADdy™ products available to current and new Smog Check providers across the State of California.

"Certification of the Smog DADdy™ products for California represents a significant opportunity for Applus Technologies. Although developed for the California market, the technology allows Applus to offer the same technological advances to our current and potential new customers within the global vehicle inspection market," said Darrin Greene, CEO of Applus Technologies.

"The Clean Air Group, based in Pleasanton, California has a team of dedicated sales professionals available to smog check providers throughout the state. They were selected as our distributor due to their extensive experience presenting solutions to the automotive aftermarket. Their past experience representing only well-respected manufacturers of emissions products in the California market validates the quality of the Smog DADdy product line. Adding them as a team member allows us to provide in-depth sales and support information to the entire California market."

Important Update

Bureau of Automotive Repair Advisory Group meeting was held April 16th at the DCA headquarters. There was an update on the OBD Inspection System (OIS) program implementation currently underway. BAR expects to resume Beta testing on May 22 following their systems updates and improvements. Applus was the first vendor to start the second phase of testing and expects to receive certification of its Smog DADdy™ products in June!

The exciting news is that owners of Applus equipment will be allowed to commence performing OIS smog checks following receipt of certification and activation of their station by BAR. This is the “soft start” that will continue later into 2014 as smog shops are brought gradually onto the new inspection system.

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!! BAR also discussed its plan for activating smog shops on the new OIS. BAR acknowledges that it cannot activate all of the new OIS users and effectively monitor for system performance. As a result, BAR plansto activate only 400 shops weekly, divided equally between the certified vendors.

What does this mean to you as a shop owner? If you delay in purchasing your Smog DADdy™ system, you could be waiting up to 5 months for system activation, regardless of the fact that you purchased your inspection system. This means that initially you could lose all the advantages of the OIS such as quick tests and better STAR scores. You could also lose the ability to move approximately 70% of your smog check away from your unreliable and expensive to maintain BAR 97 systems.

Eventually, BAR will notify shops that they only have sixty (60) more days to obtain new OIS hardware and become active. If shops do not meet that deadline, they will be forced to stop inspecting most model year 2000 and newer gas-powered vehicles and 1998 and newer diesels.

Assuming Applus is the first vendor certified, we are in a preferred position to allow you to be among the first shops in California testing on the new OIS.

Applus Smog DADdy™ is well into the 2nd Phase of Beta!

BAR has just announced that Beta testing will resume early May and anticipates certification of Applus Smog DADdy early June. Upon equipment certification, stations will be able to use Smog DADdy for 2000 and newer OBD smog inspections immediately. Take advantage of conducting faster smog checks and by ordering today! Only 10% down holds a DADdy for you.

Equipment is in limited supply. Delays in ordering may effect delivery times.

February 26, 2014 -

BAR has announced a temporarily suspension in the DAD certification process for all DAD vendors. This is a result of critical improvements that are required on the OBD Inspection System (OIS) controlled by BAR. It is estimated that the suspension will last from 4-8 weeks.

Applus Beta testing with Smog DADdy™ will continue during this suspension. Applus continues to manufacture its complete line of Smog DADdy™ products to fulfill orders upon certification and BAR approval. Prospective purchasers are encouraged to place orders early to ensure that they can take advantage of the new OBD Inspection System as soon as possible and reduce their dependence on their current BAR 97 equipment.

All vendors participating in DAD certification activity are subject to this certification freeze, regardless of where they currently stand in the process.

Watch this page daily for updates to OIS BETA testing. Yesterday marked the start of BETA testing in Sacramento for those vendors that have passed the Alpha phase of DAD testing, one of which was Applus. The start was a little later than anticipated as the BAR software download wasn’t immediately available. Once the shops received and installed it, the testing went smoothly.

Last evening Rick Escalambre, Coordinator of Automotive Technology at Skyline College in San Bruno hosted our workshop. We want to thank Rick and his team for allowing us to use their technical facility.
